Full Of Capable Playmakers, South Salem Girls Are Primed For A Run To The Chiles Center

Salem — With their Red and White night in the books, the South Salem Girls Basketball team showed flashes of their potential on both sides of the floor. The team went 20-6 overall and posted a 13-1 record in conference play, but it came to a screeching end with an unlucky second round draw against Beaverton, concluding with a 60-30 loss on the road. However, Head Coach Adrian Lewis has many reasons to be optimistic about his 2019-20 squad, as the team returns a team loaded with the talents of Hilary James, Delaney Keith, Victoria Stafford, and others, losing only a lone senior from last years squad. After his teams debut, Coach Lewis talked about the team in an in-depth team preview of what to expect from the 2019-20 Lady Saxons…

Post Tryouts, Red and White Night Assessment: “I’m really excited, we were nervous out there but I’ve got my whole core back and only lost one senior, and we’re going to be pretty fun to watch with our Run N Gun and Full Court Press.”

Adapting To The New Game Styles: “They’re going up tremendously, I try to encourage them to shoot the ball if they’re open, I’ll be more mad if they don’t do anything with it. I’ve got several shooters on my varsity squad that can light it up and others that can drive it to the paint. Hilary (James) can get just about any shot she wants, but we have shooters outside like Delaney (Keith) and Gretchen (Olsen). It also helps that we have a 6’2″ girl in the paint and another 6’0″ girl to double down with if we need to.”

Coach Lewis’s Go To Players: “Gretchen (Olsen), we need her to knock down open threes. Mimi is really developing and wants to be that player that stops their #1 girl, Victoria (Stafford) is a senior who got a little banged up earlier but averaged almost a double-double last season as a junior, Zoe Fry is coming along, she’ll be a shot blocker, and she averaged almost three blocks a game. Of course we have Delaney (Keith) coming up, but I have a squad that can do things. If I have a player not in the zone, I’ve got five others that can step up, its great!”

Season Expectations And Goals: “Our first task is to defend our title, we weren’t picked to win and flew under the radar, clicking on all cylinders at the end of the season. Now we have to have a different mentality, everyone is gunning for us especially the teams in our league. There are good teams in our league still, and our goal is to make it to the Chiles Center, but we have to win big games and get the right seeding so we don’t have to play a Beaverton in the second round like we did last year. Focus on us, know that we have a target on our backs and make sure we bring it every game because we have a lot of teams gunning for us.”
