Pendleton — In the final game of the 2A quarterfinals, the Central Linn Cobras faced the Lakeview Honkers at the Pendleton Convention Center, a great pairing to cap a day of excellent 2A action in Pendleton. Riding on the back of Ryleigh Nofziger, Central Linn would outdo a strong performance from Lakeview’s Tyler McNeley to advance to the 2A semifinals against Union, who defeated Faith Bible 53-30 earlier on Thursday.
Karlee Vickerman opened the scoring in the opening seconds for Lakeview, as the Honkers scored on the opening possession to lead 2-0. Breanna Strubel and Vickerman would get Lakeview ahead 6-3 with 5:31 left in the first, and Tyler McNeley scored later on to make it 8-4. Rowland sisters Maya and Gemma went for a 5-0 run to close the opening quarter, handing Central Linn a 9-8 lead after the first quarter. Lakeview would take the lead back to open the second, capitalizing on a Sofia Zendejas trey to lead 11-9 on the Cobras. Gemma and Maya Rowland along with Rylee Prettyman went on a 6-0 run to retake the lead 15-11 over Lakeview only 51 seconds into the quarter. After a McNeley free throw, another 5-0 run from Maya Rowland extended the lead to 20-12 Central Linn with 5:!7 left in the half.
Vickerman hit a layup to end the streak, but another Cobras run of five points made it a 25-14 game with a bit over two minutes left. Central Linn and Lakeview would have a tug of war down the stretch of the half, ending with the Cobras leading 29-20 over the Honkers at halftime. Maya Rowland’s 11 points in the first half led Central Linn, Karlee Vickerman had eight points for Lakeview at the half. Trailing by nine, Kenna Stratton and Vickerman got Lakeview back within a 30-24 margin with 4:42 left in the third quarter. Gemma Rowland and Ryleigh Nofziger combined for a 6-2 run to extend the margin back to double digits 36-26 in just over 30 seconds of game time.
Just like the second quarter, the teams traded punches down the stretch that kept Central Linn’s margin at ten points after three quarters 42-32. The Cobras opened the final quarter to put it away for good, kicking open a 6-0 run by Nofzinger, Ashlei Ramirez, and Bri Beauchamp to take a 48-32 advantage. The Honkers wouldn’t give up without a fight, hitting a 9-0 stretch to close the gap to 48-41 with 3:14 left in the game. The Cobras would eventually close out the game with free throws, advancing themselves to the 2A semifinals against Union 55-43. Lakeview heads to the 2A consolation bracket against Faith Bible on Friday at Pendleton High School. Ryleigh Nofziger finished with a 19 point, 12 rebound double-double for Central Linn, Lakeview’s Tyler McNeley had 13 and 13 for her double-double performance.
