Coos Bay — The 3A team that boasts not a single senior is headed to the state semifinals: Sutherlin. Being paired with the Amity Warriors on Thursday night in Coos Bay, the Bulldogs got off to a slow start that made things interesting for a bit. However, the full power of Sutherlin came around to close it out and send themselves to Friday night, picking up what turned out to be a comfortable win over Amity in the Elite Eight.
In the early going, Amity got off to a fast start behind a Kylie Kendall trey and Ellie McMullen layup, leading 5-0 in the first minute. Addyson Clark opened the scoring for Sutherlin, but Amity answered with Megan Scharf’s layup to make it a 7-2 Warriors lead. Trailing 10-6 with 4:34 left in the first, Micah Wicks drilled a trey to pull Sutherlin within a point, but McMullen came through for Amity again with a pair of treys down the stretch to open up a 16-11 Amity lead with 1:40 left in the first. Sutherlin closed out the quarter strong, with Madison Wagner and Wicks leading a 6-0 run to give the Bulldogs a 17-16 lead after one quarter.
Amity took the lead back early in the second on a Mya Haarsma layup, which would be the only basket scored for nearly three minutes. At the 4:40 mark, Sutherlin finally broke the stalemate with a Wagner trey, but Amity hit back with a bucket from Sara Grove to tie it at 20 apiece and McMullen hit a trey to give Amity the lead 23-20 with 3:43 left in the half. Just like with the first quarter, Sutherlin closed stronger than they started, finishing on a 9-0 run fueled by Wagner, Wicks, and Paige Edmonson to take a 29-23 lead into the half. Ellie McMullen and Micah Wicks led all scorers with 11 points apiece for Amity and Sutherlin at halftime.
Things started to form together for Sutherlin in the third quarter, while turnovers dug a massive hole for Amity. Starting up where they left off, Sutherlin went on a 13-0 run as part of a 22-0 run dating back to the second quarter, fueling the Bulldogs to blow open a 42-23 lead over Amity with 5:20 left in the third. Ellie McMullen finally ended the run with a pair of layups, cutting it to a 43-27 game in the third. Sutherlin would not be stopped though, as the Bulldogs closed out the quarter on a 12-0 run to take a commanding 55-27 lead over Amity after three quarters of play.
The Bulldogs would cruise in the final quarter to win it 64-31 over Amity, advancing them to the 3A Semifinals on Friday night against Brookings-Harbor or Nyssa. Amity heads to the 3A consolation against the loser of Brookings-Harbor and Nyssa on Friday. Micah Wicks led Sutherlin and all scorers with 23 points, Madison Wagner added 12 for the Bulldogs. For Amity, Ellie McMullen’s 15 points led their team.
