Jefferson Opens With A Rain Shortened 9-3 Win Over Lowell, Picking Up Their First Opening Day Win Since 2016

Lowell — The 2022 season was a wet one across Oregon, washing out a handful of games from the wet conditions. The Jefferson Lady Lions traveled down to Lowell to open their season, braving the rain and wind to face the Red Devils. Coming off a two-win campaign in 2021, the Lady Lions looked to open the year with their first season opener victory since 2016. Lowell finished the 2021 season with a 6-9 record while fielding an all-freshman squad, entering the day seeking their first opening game win since 2015.

The season opener started with a pair of hit by pitches, giving the Lady Lions runners on first and second right off the bat against Lowell. Later in the inning, the Lady Lions had a pair of runners on base with two outs when Zoe Moore delivered an RBI single to left field, putting Jefferson up 1-0 in the top of the first. Lilyanne Alford would score on a wild pitch later in the half inning, extending the Lady Lions lead to 2-0 after the top of the first. Sophomore Nayeli Hart struck out the side in the bottom of the first, keeping Jefferson ahead 2-0 after one inning of play.

Jefferson put together another rally in the top of the second, loading up the bases with Lady Lions and no outs. Samara Vickery would produce an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 3-0, and the game was blown open from there on out with help from Lowell. Alford, Moore, Kim Peterson, and Peyton Scovell all reached base via walks and hit by pitches, making it a 7-0 Lady Lions advantage in the top of the second. With two outs and a 7-0 lead, Moore would score on a wild pitch to make it 8-0 Jefferson after one and a half innings. Just like the first inning, Nayeli Hart struck out the side in the second to keep Lowell at bay and an 8-0 lead preserved.

In what would become the final inning due to rain, Paytonlyn Baldwin drove in another run for Jefferson via walk, giving the Lady Lions a 9-0 lead entering the final half inning of play. In a nine-run hole, Lowell would finish the day on a better note than it started. Brooke Davis put the Red Devils on the board with an RBI single, and would later score on a wild pitch with one out in the inning, getting Lowell two runs and making it a 9-2 game. Kenadee Hermansen would get an RBI on a Jefferson error, cutting the lead to a 9-3 score, but Hart would grab three more strikeouts to close out a 9-3 win for the Lady Lions in a rain shortened victory.

Nayeli Hart went three innings, allowing three runs total with only one earned while picking up nine strikeouts and only one hit on the day to pick up the win. Zoey Moore went 1-2 with a walk and 2 RBI, scoring a run as well. Brooke Herrman and Lily Alford both scored two runs apiece for Jefferson, who won their first season opener since 2016.

Jefferson (1-0) hosts Santiam Christian on Wednesday, Lowell (0-1) visits Harrisburg/Mohawk on Friday.
