Sherwood Starts 2022 Strong With Their Second Meet Victory 7-1 Over Tigard

Tigard — One day after defeating a tough 5A opponent in Crescent Valley 6-3, the Sherwood Lady Bowmen returned to the court on Thursday to face the Tigard Tigers, who dropped their season opener on Wednesday to TRL rival Tualatin 5-3. The highlights of the meet were the top singles matchup between Sydney Board and Mandie Jensen, along with the top doubles pairing (Jessica Zaubi, Vicky Nguyen vs Katelyn Schaures, Haley Cabrera). Outside of the top seedings, the depth of Sherwood simply put Tigard on full overrun in their meet on Thursday.

Starting the day was a showdown between Board and Jensen in the top tier singles, two young ladies that went a combined 14-2 in the shortened 2021 season this past Spring. There were plenty of long rallies and great, aggressive play between the senior and sophomore throughout their match. The senior Board would prevail against Jensen, taking the match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory for Tigard. Meg McLaughlin picked up Sherwood’s first victory of the meet, taking care of Alyssa Thoren with a quick 6-1, 6-0 game in the second-tier match.

Over in the doubles area, another great battle was underway in the top tier flight of the meet. Zaubi and Nguyen had some tug of wars in the first set, trading blows with Schaures and Cabrera until the opponents were forced into an overtime game of sorts. Zaubi and Nguyen prevailed in the opening set, taking it 7-6 and finished off the victory with a 6-2 second set win, picking up a hard-fought victory for the Lady Bowmen. Similarly to their singles counterparts, Keeley McCaulley and Emma Douglass had no problems with their Tigard opponents, rolling to a quick 6-0, 6-1 victory over the Tigers.

The rest of the matches were pretty smooth sailing for the Lady Bowmen, with Morgan McArthur and Lauren Andersen cruising to victory in their singles matches 6-1, 6-0 and straight 6-0, 6-0. The team of Paiges (Paige Bittner and Paige Evans) picked up a victory in the third-tier doubles 6-0, 6-1, and the fourth-tier tandem Lainey Fischer and Emma Weniger came away with a 6-2, 6-1 victory to finish the day. Overall, Sherwood won the meet 7-1 to improve their record to 2-0 this season, Tigard dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

The Lady Bowmen (2-0) are off until Tuesday when they visit the Sunset Apollos, Tigard (0-2) heads to Portland to face St. Mary’s Academy on Monday.
