Toledo — The Preseason #1 in the 2A/1A Coaches Poll traveled over six hours down the Oregon Coast to Toledo, playing a slate of games on Friday and Saturday against 4A opponents Tillamook and Seaside, along with 2A/1A #5 Toledo Boomers. They opened play on Friday afternoon against the Boomers, playing for the first time on a turf field.
For the top ranked Ladycats, the game started with a pair of baserunners from a walk and hit batter, setting up the catcher Jazmyne Gonzales with an opportunity to open the scoring. Gonzales delivered a 2 RBI play on an outfield error, getting Union/Cove on the board 2-0 against Toledo, allowing Gonzales to reach third base for another runner in scoring position. Two batters later, an error from the catcher on a throwdown to third base allowed her to score, making it a 3-0 Ladycats lead after a half inning. The Boomers would strike back in the bottom of the first, with the first two batters reaching base to setup Hannah Reed, who delivered an RBI single to get Toledo on the board. Sierra Ferguson loaded the bases with a single and Mariah Frederic brought home another run, again via RBI single and the Boomers were within 3-2 with bases packed and no outs. Starter Callie Glenn would settle down, working out of the mess with three straight outs and preserving a 3-2 lead after one inning.
Toledo starter Frederic sat down the Ladycats in order in the second, with the Boomers finding more offense in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Reed delivered an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field, tying the game at three runs each after two innings. Both offenses were sat down in order in the third inning, but Union/Cove would retake the lead on a two-out, RBI single from Tasha Thiesfeld to make it a 4-3 Ladycats advantage. Jumping to the bottom of the fifth, Union/Cove was still leading 4-3 when Frederic delivered a bomb for Toledo, drilling a two-run shot over the left field fence to give the Boomers a 5-4 lead after five innings of play. Trailing for the first time, the Ladycats loaded up the bases with no outs to start the sixth inning, setting up what would become the defining stretch of the game.
Theisfield executed a perfect suicide squeeze play to tie the game at five runs, and Kali Coots scored two batters later on a passed ball, giving Union/Cove the lead back 6-5 over Toledo. With the bases still loaded and two outs, Gonzales drew a walk to force home a run that made it 7-5, and Cabella Gregory delivered the dagger via a 2 RBI double that extended it to a 9-5 Union/Cove lead. The Ladycats would go on to win 9-5 over Toledo to open the Boomer Bash.
Cabella Gregory went 1-4 with a double and 2 RBI, Tasha Thiesfeld finished 1-3 with 2 RBI. For Toledo, Mariah Frederic went 2-4 with a HR and 3 RBI to lead the Boomers, Hannah Reed was 2-4 as well with 2 RBI. #1 Union/Cove (1-0) play Seaside at 8 AM on Saturday at the Boomer Bash, #5 Toledo (1-1) plays Tillamook at 2 PM at the Boomer Bash.
