Sweet Home — Add another event victory to the resume for the Philomath Warriors this season, with this coming in the Meet of Champions down in Sweet Home on Saturday. With the weather being picture perfect, it brought out the stars and plenty of action to watch throughout the afternoon. In a battle between Oregon West opponents, Philomath and Cascade battled in enemy territory to try and win the Meet of Champions.
Field events weren’t where Cascade or Philomath won the meet, as those champions were scattered across the spectrum of class sizes. Laura Young (Monroe), Trinidy Blanton (Coquille), Emma Gates (Cascade), Gracie Vohs (Sisters), Elise Linderman (Santiam Christian), and Whitley Stepp (Regis) took each field event on Saturday, with Philomath and Cascade picking up some filler points towards their overall scores. For third place Regis, they picked up 32 of their 55 points in the meet from field events, fourth place Coquille picked up 15 points in field events.
In the track events, Cascade and Philomath separated themselves from the field in a huge way. Arizona commit and Cascade star Emma Gates dominated the 100 and 200 meter events, winning each event by a comfortable margin of 0.56 and 1.13 seconds respectively. Natalie Dunn struck back for Philomath, seizing the 400 meters event, while teammates Aneeka Steen, Melea Lattin, and Jazz Choi all finished in the Top 5 of the 800 meters race. Condon’s Kallyn Wilkins and Bandon’s Holly Hutton won the 800 meters and 1500 meters, Newport’s Aliya Larsen took the 3000 meters, and Lauren Crowell from Regis won the 100 meter hurdles.
What ultimately pulled Philomath away over the field were their wins in the 300 meter hurdles and both relay races, picking up a critical 30 points against Cascade’s 16 points for finishing runner-up in the relays. In the end, the Warriors pulled away with 107.5 points to defeat Cascade and win the Meet of Champions in Sweet Home. Cascade finished runner-up with 78 points, Regis (55), Coquille (47), and Sisters (45) rounded out the top five finishers in the event.
