The first two track and field district meets are in the books for the 2022 season, with the Mt. Hood Conference and 3A Special District 2 wrapping up their meets on Wednesday in Salem and Gresham. Here are recaps of Oregon’s first district championships to wrap up this Spring:
Mt. Hood Conference
It was hotly contested for the 2022 Mt. Hood Conference title, as Central Catholic was locked in a tight battle with Clackamas and David Douglas. Track events are what carried the Rams to a conference title, with Central Catholic’s Lakely Doht-Barron sweeping the 200 and 400 meter events and the Rams going 1-2-3 in the long distance 1500 and 3000 meters races with Ella McGillis winning both races. The icing on the cake were Central Catholic’s victories in both relay races as well, igniting what turned out to be a 268 point performance to win the conference title.
To keep pace with Central Catholic, David Douglas and Clackamas scrapped together strong showings in track and field events, with the Cavaliers winning four field events (1 was 1-2 and another was 1-2-3) and a track event. Alina Bosyuk won the 300 Hurdles and finished runner-up in the 100 Hurdles to fuel David Douglas, who had consistent finishing in many events to get them third place in the Mt. Hood Conference. Here are the full results:
Champion: Central Catholic (268)
2nd to 9th: Clackamas (254), David Douglas (212), Barlow and Nelson (176), Reynolds (88), Sandy (76), Gresham (56), Centennial (12)
3A Special District 2
Willamina star Hallee Hughes put on a show at the 3A District 2 meet in Salem this week, sweeping the shot put, javelin, and discus events. Santiam Christian won five events in the meet, but it was the team that only needed one win and a bunch of consistency to win the district title is the one that came out on top: Blanchet Catholic.
In their lone event win, Emma Lutz won the 1500 meters event for the Lady Cavaliers. Beyond the win, Blanchet Catholic finished in the Top 3 of seven track and field events, which ultimately carried them to 280 points and a district title for the 2022 season. Santiam Christian finished runner-up with 208 points. Some other notes from the meet: Taft Freshman Sienna Lillebo won her first district titles in the 100 and 200 meters events, and Scio’s Athena Lau set personal bests in the 1500 and 3000 meters en route to a district title and runner-up in the events.
