Each Softball Class Playoff Picture Entering The Final Week Of Play

Well we made it ladies! Who will obtain those final spots in the playoffs and who will be sitting on the couch? We will find out all of those answers by Saturday when the rankings lock in for every class and the brackets become finalized. Here is the state of every class, conference, and playoff picture as we enter the final week of play:

Class 6A

Current Auto Bids

Portland Interscholastic League: Roosevelt, Franklin, Grant

Metro League: Westview, Mountainside, Jesuit

Pacific Conference: McMinnville, Sherwood, Newberg

Mt. Hood Conference: Central Catholic, Nelson, Reynolds

Three Rivers League: Tigard, Oregon City, Canby

Mountain Valley Conference: Bend, McNary, South Salem

Southwest Conference: South Medford, Sheldon, Roseburg

Current At-Large Bids

Tualatin (14), Sprague (17), Lakeridge (18), Lake Oswego (20), Forest Grove (21), Barlow (22), Gresham (23), Southridge (26), Grants Pass (27), Nelson (28), West Linn (29)

Last Four In: Southridge, Grants Pass, Nelson, West Linn

First Four Out: West Salem (31), Sunset (32), Sandy (33), Centennial (34)

Analysis: The cut-off for an at-large bid falls at #30 this year, as Grant and Franklin lie outside the Top 32 but have automatic bids through their PIL bids, narrowing the margin of ranking for the 32-team bracket. Roosevelt currently holds #30, making West Salem at #31 as the closest team to a playoff spot who isn’t currently in. No significant shift is expected, but Sandy could possibly snipe Reynolds for the final Mt. Hood bid and make the playoffs, eliminating anyone below #29 from making it. Aside from that, I think the final bracket will look pretty similar to this right now come Thursday night.

Class 5A

Current Auto Bids

NWOC: Wilsonville, Scappoose, Putnam, La Salle Prep

Midwestern League: Crater, Thurston, Ashland, Eagle Point

Mid-Willamette Conference: Dallas, Lebanon, West Albany, Silverton

Intermountain Conference: Pendleton, Ridgeview, The Dalles

Current At-Large Bid – Central

On The Bubble – St. Helens (NWOC Bid), Corvallis (At-Large Bid), Hood River (Intermountain Bid)

Analysis: 5A is much more straight forward, as all playoff spots are filled via auto bids and the lone at-large bid, which is awarded to the highest ranked 5th place team between the Mid-Willamette and Midwestern. Willamette sits at #19 as 5th in the Midwestern, while Central and Corvallis are 5th and 6th in the Mid-Willamette with rankings of #14 and #15 in 5A, making it all but probable that one of these two will get the bid. Hood River and The Dalles are tied for the final auto-bid in the Intermountain, with the teams meeting for a doubleheader on Tuesday to potentially break the deadlock.

Class 4A

Current Main Bracket Auto Bids

Cowapa: Astoria

Tri-Valley: Estacada

Oregon West: Cascade, Stayton

Sky Em: Marist

Skyline: Henley

Greater Oregon: La Grande, Ontario

Current Auto Play-In Bids: Valley Catholic, Seaside, Corbett, Madras, Sweet Home, Marshfield, Elmira, Mazama, Hidden Valley, Baker

Current At-Large Bids: Philomath (13), Banks (15), Junction City (17), Cottage Grove (18), McLoughlin (22), Phoenix (23)

Current Bubble Teams: Gladstone (Conference Bid)

Analysis: This looks complicated, but it simply goes down to this: Top 3 go from each league, six highest ranked teams after that also go to state, OSAA just splits up the brackets. Gladstone is tied in the Tri-Valley with Madras for the final auto bid with one game left, but the Gladiators need some help from North Marion to beat Madras on Monday since Madras holds the tiebreaker. Everyone else is done for the most part, so the bracket likely won’t move at all.

Class 3A

Current Auto Bids

PacWest: Yamhill-Carlton, Scio

Mountain Valley: Harrisburg, Pleasant Hill

Far West: Brookings-Harbor, South Umpqua

District 1: Taft, Warrenton

District 2: Burns, Enterprise, Vale

Current At-Large Bids: Dayton (8), Santiam Christian (11), Blanchet Catholic (12), Douglas (14), Creswell (16)

Current Bubble Teams: Amity (17), Rainier (18)

Analysis: Just like most classes, this bracket is also pretty set in stone at this point. Rainier might be able to jump Creswell and will certainly jump Amity, which could be the only level of excitement that comes out of this week in terms of playoff movement. Other than that, congrats to everyone who will be in the playoffs this year and good luck!

Class 2A/1A

Current Auto Bids

District 1: Nesucca, Knappa, Gaston

District 2: Kennedy, Santiam, Jefferson

District 3: Glide, North Douglas, Monroe, Days Creek

District 4: Toledo, Bandon, Reedsport

District 5: Lakeview, Lost River, Rogue River

District 6: Grant Union/Prairie City, Union/Cove, Weston-McEwen

Current At-Large Bids: Neah-Kah-Nie (16), Echo/Stanfield (17), Pilot Rock (18)

Bubble Teams: Santiam (20), Oakridge (21)

Analysis: Santiam and Oakridge have room to gain this week if they can pick up dubs, as the three at-large teams have completed their schedules. It is an outside shot for either one, but you never know in high school sports! Other than that, everything is staying the same across the board.
