Makenna Houston Drops State Record As Damascus, Coquille, And Catlin Gabel Lead After Day 1

Eugene — The small schools kicked off our action at Hayward Field in Eugene on Thursday to begin the 2022 State Championships. Here is your daily recap of the action and where things stand entering Friday’s massive finals session:

Class 1A

Damascus Christian opened up a team lead with 28.5 points after the first day of action, leading North Lake (26.5), Crane (22), and Dufur (14) in the overall standings. The source of their early lead come from Emily Powers and Sierra Hale, who posted 16 points from their 1st and 3rd place finish in the Javelin event, along with Ava Mai’s state title in the long jump event. For North Lake, they got a 2-3-4 finish in the high jump from Julie Roth, Emily Murphy, and Hannah Roth, while Julie Roth also finished state runner-up in the long jump. Kortney Doman won the high jump state title for Crane, and Leslie Doman took state runner-up in the discus.

Class 2A

Setting a new state record in the 3,000 meters race, Columbia Christian’s Makena Houston posted a 10:11.99 to win the state title ahead of East Linn Christian’s Daisy Lalonde by 24 seconds. Coquille leads the overall team standings with 28 points, fueled by Trinidy Blanton’s state title in the Javelin event. Defending 2A champion Regis sits behind the Red Devils with 22 points, picking up a state title from Whitley Stepp in the long jump.

Class 3A

Willamina star Hallee Hughes went out with a bang on Thursday, rolling to state titles in the discus and javelin events for the Bulldogs and getting them to third overall in the team standings. Catlin Gabel holds a slim 0.5 point advantage over defending 3A champion Sutherlin after the first day, picking up a pair of state titles by Megan Cover and Caroline Mauro. A pair of state runner-ups and a third place finish have the Bulldogs neck-and-neck with Catlin Gabel.
