West Salem — The annual Labor Day Classic softball tournament took place this weekend at Wallace Marine Park in West Salem, officially starting fall season for club softball and marking the end of the summer. On Monday afternoon, Oregon Thunder Hildreth faced Lady Kingers Trickel in the 16A championship game, which was a winner-take-all scenario instead of the typical double victories required for the loser bracket team.
Things were off and running in a hurry for the Thunder, kicking off things with a pair of singles from Brooklynn Robinson and Olivia Hildreth, setting up Joey Sizemore for an RBI single to open the scoring 1-0 for the Thunder. With one out, Kaylee Dinger extended the lead with an RBI groundout, making it a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Ellie Joseph would get out of the jam with a strikeout for the Lady Kingers, ending the threat and getting the bats out for them trailing 2-0. With the bases loaded and two outs, Addy Case stole home and scored for the Lady Kingers, cutting the deficit to 2-1 after an inning of play.
Holding the Thunder scoreless in the second inning, the Lady Kingers struck again in the bottom of the inning, as Mia Yanez drove home Peyton Trickel and Leah Emmarson on a sacrifice fly to hand them their first lead of the game 3-2 after two innings. Ahead to the fourth inning with the Lady Kingers still leading 3-2, the Thunder had a pair of runners at the plate with one out for Dorothy Carty, and she delivered a three-run shot to retake the lead 5-3 over the Lady Kingers. Later in the inning, Grace Wickum delivered a two-RBI double for the Thunder, extending the advantage to 7-3 and cap a five-run frame.
In the fifth inning, the Lady Kingers fought back with a trio of RBI singles from Yanez, Ellie Joseph, and Chloe Stromme, bringing themselves within a 7-6 deficit after five innings. Still leading by a run, the Thunder added insurance in the sixth inning, as Hildreth and Sizemore delivered RBI knocks to extend it to a 9-6 advantage heading into the final frame. Wickum would finish the job in the circle for the Thunder, forcing a pair of outs and striking out another to finish the game off with a 9-6 victory and a championship title to kick off the fall campaign.
Dorothy Canty led the way at the plate for Oregon Thunder, finishing with a HR and 3 RBI in the win. Olivia Hildreth and Grace Wickum both collected doubles, combining for 3 RBI and Joey Sizemore added two more RBI. Mia Yanez led the Lady Kingers with 2 RBI on the game, Ellie Joseph and Chloe Stromme added RBI’s respectively, and Leah Emmarson had a double in the game.
